Arriving at Accra International Airport (formerly Kotoka): the practical guide
Kotoka International Airport was renamed Accra International Airport in February 2026. The IATA code is still ACC, and everyone still says Kotoka. Here's exactly what happens from the jet bridge to your ride into town.
Arrival steps
1. Port Health: the yellow card check
Before immigration, Port Health officials check your yellow fever certificate (ICVP). It's required for all travellers aged 9 months and older, issued at least 10 days before arrival, and valid for life. Keep it with your passport, not in checked luggage.
2. Immigration
Have your passport (6+ months validity), your eVisa/ETA approval if you needed one, and ideally your accommodation address. Officers may ask about onward travel.
3. Baggage and customs
Carts are free. Declare currency over US$10,000; undeclared amounts risk confiscation. Watch your bags; politely decline unsolicited 'porters' unless you want to tip for help.
4. SIM card
MTN, Telecel and AirtelTigo booths are in the arrivals hall. Registration is biometric and needs your physical passport, so allow 10–15 minutes. Data is cheap; MTN has the broadest coverage countrywide.
5. Money
Change a small amount to cedi (GHS) airside or at arrivals forex bureaus for the first day, then use bank ATMs in town. Ride-hailing drivers often prefer cash even when the app says card.
6. Getting into the city
Uber and Bolt work well. Follow the app to the designated pickup zone and confirm the plate. Official taxis: agree the fare before you ride. Accra traffic peaks 07:00–10:00 and 16:00–20:00; plan accordingly.

Yes. Kotoka International Airport was officially renamed Accra International Airport on 23 February 2026. The IATA code is unchanged: ACC. Locals, drivers and many websites still say 'Kotoka'.
What happens first when I land in Accra?
Port Health checks your yellow fever certificate (ICVP) before you reach immigration, so have it ready with your passport and visa/ETA approval. Then immigration, baggage, and customs (declare cash over US$10,000).
Can I buy a SIM card at Accra airport?
Yes. MTN, Telecel and AirtelTigo have booths in arrivals. SIM registration is biometric and requires your physical passport; allow 10–15 minutes. MTN has the widest coverage.

Uber and Bolt both operate in Accra with designated airport pickup points. Confirm the driver and plate before getting in. Official airport taxis are available but agree the fare first. Many hotels arrange pickup. Most drivers prefer cash (cedi).
Should I exchange money at Accra airport?
Get a small amount of cedi (GHS) at the airport for your ride and first day, then use bank ATMs in the city for better rates. Cards work in malls and hotels, but markets, taxis and many tours are cash-first.

GuideX is a travel-experiences marketplace, not a visa service, and this page is not legal advice. Entry requirements change frequently (nine material changes in the last two years), so always confirm with the official Ghana eVisa portal or your nearest Ghanaian mission before booking travel. Airlines verify documents against IATA Timatic at check-in; a visa or ETA does not guarantee entry, which remains at the discretion of the Ghana Immigration Service.
